I stumbled on this photo while surfing the net today and it really got me thinking about all the unnecessary controversy surrounding the issue of abortion. It seems the issue isn't really with abortion itself but with peoples individual views of morality. If the issue was with the medical procedure then the arguments wouldn't be that God says its wrong or that its murder.
Why is it that issues like these that should be a persons private choice are pushed to the forefront of Presidential elections to be debated on? Why do we as Americans focus on such trivial things that in all fairness shouldn't even be considered when it comes to elections? Especially when the focus is put on religious reasoning and personal beliefs. I agree that a potential Presidential candidate's character and beliefs play a role in deciding whether they could be a suitable leader because who wants a child molester or murderer running the country, but I believe the stance that a candidate has on more important issues (i.e. Education, the suffering economy, our continuing occupation of Iraq, our increasing national deficit, and rising crime rate) far outweigh whether s/he is a 'good Christian' or comparable to a saint.
A potential Presidential electee should be chosen based on what s/he can do to better our country in ways that benefit
all American citizens. And in no way should a candidate be exempt from upholding our Constitutional rights or be allowed to violate them. It saddens me that instead of being Americans and staying true to what our forefathers fought to give us, we want to turn our backs on certain freedoms because we don't agree with something. The things that seperate America from other countries is our acceptance of differences in other people. Our willingness to open our doors to the needy and underpriveligded and create a life better than what some otherwise might have lived. When we ignore the foundation that America was built on we take away the very thing that makes us so great. We are the land of the free, but not if our political leaders are allowed to walk all over the rights our brave soldiers, past and present, have fought and died to instill and protect for our country.
America the Great, right now its more like, America the Fake.

...and plus, Roe v. Wade already decided the legality of abortion yearsss ago and the president [or president-to-be] doesn't really have much jurisdiction over the issue anymore.
oh well. whatever it takes to win an election :(
@bruceXbatman - I know...thats the point I was making. Presidential candidates will put the most controversial issue in the forefront regardless of whether it has any bearing on the election just to gain support, thus subtracting attention from the really important issues. Its a shame that the people we are choosing to run our country will do anything for a vote. That really gives me faith in our justice system, lol!
hmm, indeed!
Hello there :)
Got your message... nah, I'm not generally an angry person, just an honest person... and I dunno, people are a little bit, umm... sensitive these days, perhaps.
Truth hurts, as they say.
So what do you think of that Alaskan lady helping out McCain with the elections? She sounds a bit unprofessional to me. Of course, I'm all the way over here in Australia... we only hear bits and pieces of news about American politics.
Take care

@GStarDragon - I honestly don't think she could hack it in such a high profile political position. She has a newborn with Down Syndrome and her 17 year old daughter is going to have a baby. I think she needs to focus on her family and then pursue her political career. Her family might resent her for being away alot.
Great post, I love America the fake. We need to get it together, I'm definitely not ready to give up some of my freedoms because some people think it is best or morally right. I'm all about sticking to the real issues that effect everyone such as education, the economy, rising crime, etc. What someone else chooses to do to their body is not a priority in my life.
@TiRocKiinPiinK - Thanks! I know theres been alot of political posts and response posts but I felt that I had to stick up for what really matters. And to me, the abortion issue doesn't matter in an election. Glad that someone else sees what is happening to this formerly great country!
All of our elections should be based on what the pres intends to do with the discretionary budget. When candidates do not have any ideas, they run on emotional issues like abortion. But republicans won't do anything about abortion. They just had a golden opportunity: 6 years of control of all three branches of legislation...how many abortions did they stop? They can't just do away with it because it is such a great campaign rallying cry. It is the goose that laid the golden egg. If they ended abortion what would they run on?
Its not so bad that they want to ban abortion, as bad as they're willing to go as far as appointing justices just on their stance of this case as their method to overturn it! At that, theres no legal basis to overturn it, and if and when its overturned whats next? They've already stacked the Supreme Court with people who will overturn things without a legal basis, the madness won't stop there.
But the hypocrisy of the matter... is that Barack Obama is getting slammed on abortion and McCain is some saint... when in reality whatever they believe doesn't matter a single bit! All the regulation is at the state level. Unless McCain wants to micro-manage the country and get involved with state issues, his stands mean NOTHING. But they don't understand that, do they?
What about Planned Parenthood, who actually lowers the amount of unwanted pregnancies with the contraceptive services they provide. Yet, viciously attacked for doing so.
I think Republicans don't want abortion to end nor do they want to reduce abortions, because then they have nothing to whine about. I don't know how you can call yourself Pro-Life and Pro-war, or pro-life and anti-healthcare, or pro-life and anti-SCHIP.... imagine that. They aren't pro-life, just pro-birth.
@wallyfu - If they ended abortion they'd just turn to tattoos and piercings or some other ludicrous anti-issue to rally conservative extremist votes.
@Bobby - I agree, its odd that the 'issue' is used merely as a form of gaining supporters while the candidate really has no intention or right to address the issue once in office. Its a high controversy topic that gets the publics' attention and takes away from the really important problems America is facing. And it doesn't really help that a person can be really smart, but people (as in groups) are dumber than rocks and will follow the masses for acceptance. Its like one giant highschool with the popular crowd running the school and everyone else emulating them.
Well spoken... er... written ;)
Thank you! I'm glad to find out I'm not the only one who thinks this way!
I think the only reason they ask any politician is to see that they are humans after all. The president, isnt just a president. Hes a husband, a friend, and most importantly, a father.
But even tho that is a good debate question, no one is ever going to agree 100%
We could both be pro-life, or pro-choice, but have different reasons for why.
Its questions like this, and many others, that no matter how hard we "fight" for it together, we're never going to agree on it fully, and accept it.
(i loved reading this post)
You're right it is not about abortion because there have been studies that show that making abortion legal does NOT increase the number of abortions women seek. It is about people being control freaks or not.
Ah, I've been telling people this for I don't know how long. Glad I stumbled through this plug. Well said!

it's their right, for persons interested in this issue, to make an attempt to draw attention to it as long as they're not breaking any laws in doing so.
honestly, I haven't heard much about the issue of abortion from either candidate. you're right: it isn't the most important issue in this election. likewise, neither candidate has made it their priority issue either. still, each candidate is going to have their particular stance and govern accordingly.
"instead of being Americans and staying true to what our forefathers
fought to give us, we want to turn our backs on certain freedoms
because we don't agree with something." what exactly might that be? the first amendment? or so-called women's rights?
I agree. There a many more important things that people need to be worrying about. To me, issues ike these are a tad selfish because it doesn't affect everyone. The economy, on the other hand, does. So, people are pretty much saying "This is important to me, so it should be important to you as well!" which is a load of... well, you know. People need to choose their battles wisely and realise that maybe, just maybe, they aren't going to do a damn thing by hollering at the top of their lungs on a public street.
I am not saying that you shouldn't be passionate, but we should all do things in moderation. This issue (as well as many others) are brought up time and time again and, to be honest, it's getting a little annoying.
Thanks for using a plug for something actually worth saying.
Everything you said actually supports their concern about this. They Value life and want to fight for the life of the unborn child. If you want to 'benefit all American citizens' it would make sense that it should include those future citizens who don't get a choice to live. If I was in some ladies belly and she wanted to abort me, later in my life I'd certainly be happy that someone fought for my life at some point so I could be here now.
I have a problem with a human life, any human life, being refered to as a " trivial thing."
America is all about diversion. This is why the homeless situation never gets solved, why education is going down the shitter, why our country is now looked at with scorn and disgust.
We. Don't. Care.
Half of the country is hell-bent on pushing religious ideologies into a separated forum, while the other is condemning those same people for having religious beliefs in the first place.
People want drama, and nothing makes drama more than abortion or talks about abortion.
No shit.
Man, I've been saying the same thing for a long time. Its much more important when it comes to a judge or congressman, as far as whether or not they are for or against abortion. However, if you ask those people who are so passionate one way or another whether their congressional representative is for or agaisnt it, chances are, they won't know.
perssonally, i'm with the chick that has the sign that says "don't believe in abortion? don't have one!" pro-choice!
people just go over board about the abortion issue. the people that don't believe in it need to realize, we're humans. we do stupid shit. sometimes things happen, weather its our fault or not. they should just get over it. leave it along. let the people that want them get em and the ones that don't, well don't! its not as big of an issue as its made out to be. i just think it should be legal and leave it at that. not EVERYONE is a child of God, and i know for some people thats hard to believe but suck it up and get over it.
